Hot Air Balloon Ride in Marrakech with Kids: A Family Guide

Can Children Go on a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Marrakech?

Yes. Children aged 6 and above are welcome on all our balloon flights. Children under 6 are not permitted, and there are no exceptions to this rule. It is not a commercial restriction — it is a safety standard observed by balloon operators worldwide and enforced by aviation authorities.

The reason is straightforward. Children under 6 cannot reliably stand for 45 to 60 minutes, cannot follow safety instructions during landing, and may not be tall enough to be safely contained by the basket walls. From age 6 onward, children fly with us regularly, and they consistently have an extraordinary time.

Why Kids Love Balloon Rides

Adults tend to appreciate the views and the serenity. Children tend to appreciate everything else — and that is what makes this such a successful family activity.

The inflation process is riveting. Before the flight, children watch the balloon laid flat on the ground and gradually inflated with cold air from giant fans, then shaped into its full form by the burner. Most children have never seen anything that large come to life in front of them. It takes about 15 minutes, and most kids are transfixed for every second of it.

The burner is thrilling. The propane burner produces a roaring flame that heats the air inside the envelope. It is loud, warm and visually dramatic. Children love it. The pilot fires it in short blasts, and within minutes most kids are anticipating each one with excitement rather than nervousness.

Spotting things from above is a game in itself. From 500 to 1,000 metres, the landscape becomes a living map. Children spot camels, donkeys, goats, farmers on horseback, swimming pools, football pitches, rivers and roads. The Atlas Mountains on the horizon look like something from a film. There is always something new to point at, and the slow pace of the balloon means nothing rushes past too quickly.

The floating sensation is gentle, not frightening. There is no lurching, no turbulence, no engine vibration. The balloon drifts with the wind, which means there is no sensation of movement at all — you feel as though the world is turning beneath you while you stand perfectly still. Children who are nervous about roller coasters or fast rides find balloon flights completely comfortable.

The breakfast afterward is a reward. After landing, a traditional Moroccan breakfast is served outdoors — fresh bread, honey, olive oil, soft cheese, pastries and mint tea. Children eat well, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the whole family has just shared something genuinely memorable. It is the kind of morning that gets talked about for years.

Age and Height Considerations

The minimum age is 6 years old, but age alone is not the only factor. Your child should also meet these practical criteria:

  • Tall enough to see over the basket edge. The basket walls are approximately 1.2 metres high — waist-height for most adults, chest-height for a typical 6 to 8-year-old. Children need to be able to look out over the edge to enjoy the views. A child who cannot see anything will have a less rewarding experience.
  • Able to stand for the full flight. There are no seats inside the basket. The flight lasts 45 to 60 minutes, and everyone stands for the duration. Most children aged 6 and above manage this without difficulty, especially when they are distracted by the scenery. Younger children can lean against the basket wall or against a parent, but they must remain standing.
  • Able to follow basic instructions. During landing, the pilot asks everyone to hold on to the handles inside the basket and bend their knees. Children need to be able to understand and follow these simple directions.

If your child meets these criteria, they will do brilliantly. We fly with families every week, and children are almost always the most enthusiastic passengers in the basket.

Is It Safe for Children?

This is the first question every parent asks, and the answer is yes — comfortably so.

The basket is secure. Balloon baskets are made of woven wicker and rattan, reinforced with steel cables. The walls are approximately 1.2 metres high, which is well above waist-height for a child. There is no gap, no opening and no risk of a child slipping through or under the wall. Once inside, children are fully contained.

The ascent is gradual. The balloon rises at a rate that most people cannot even perceive. There is no sudden drop, no banking, no jolting. The entire flight feels more like standing on a slowly rising platform than any kind of thrill ride.

There is no turbulence. Because the balloon moves with the wind rather than against it, passengers feel no wind resistance and no buffeting. The basket is remarkably stable throughout the flight.

The pilot is experienced. Our pilots are licensed professionals with thousands of flight hours. They are accustomed to flying with children and know how to make the experience comfortable for younger passengers — including adjusting the burner timing to avoid startling a nervous child.

Insurance covers all passengers. Every person on board, including children, is fully covered by our flight insurance. This is included in the ticket price at no extra cost.

The most common reaction from parents after the flight is surprise at how calm and undramatic the whole experience felt. Hot air ballooning is statistically one of the safest forms of aviation, and the gentle nature of the flight makes it particularly well-suited to families.

Preparing Your Child for the Experience

A small amount of preparation goes a long way toward making the morning smooth and enjoyable for the whole family.

Explain What Will Happen

Walk your child through the sequence of events the night before:

  • A car will pick you up from the hotel very early, while it is still dark
  • You will drive to an open field outside the city
  • You will watch the balloon being inflated — this part is exciting
  • You will climb into a big basket and float up into the sky
  • The pilot will fire a loud burner to make the balloon go higher — this is normal and safe
  • You will float gently for about an hour, looking at everything below
  • The landing might have a small bump — everyone holds on and bends their knees
  • After landing, you will have breakfast outdoors

Children who know what to expect handle every stage confidently. Children who are surprised by the early wake-up or the burner noise may start the experience feeling unsettled.

The Early Wake-Up

Hotel pickup is typically between 5:30 and 6:00 AM, which means your child needs to be awake, dressed and ready by 5:15 AM at the latest. This is early by any standard, and for children it can be a challenge.

The most effective approach is to frame it as an adventure — you are getting up before everyone else in the city to do something most people never get to do. Let your child go to bed early the night before, and have their clothes laid out and ready. The excitement of the morning usually overrides any grogginess within minutes of getting into the car.

The Burner Sound

The propane burner is the one element that occasionally startles younger children on their first encounter. It produces a loud roar and a visible flame above the basket. After the first two or three blasts, virtually every child adjusts and begins to enjoy it. But a quick heads-up the night before — "there will be a loud flame sound that makes the balloon go up, and it is completely normal" — prevents any surprise.

The Landing

Landings vary depending on wind conditions. Some are feather-light; others involve a gentle bump or a short drag along the ground before the basket comes to rest. The pilot always warns passengers in advance and instructs everyone to hold the handles and bend their knees. Children who have been briefed on this beforehand treat it as the most exciting part of the flight.

Practical Tips for Families

Dress Children Warmly

The launch happens at sunrise, and temperatures at altitude can be 8 to 12 degrees cooler than at ground level. Even in summer, early mornings in Marrakech can feel cool. Dress your child in layers:

  • A long-sleeved base layer
  • A fleece or light jacket
  • Closed-toe shoes with good grip (not sandals or flip-flops)

By the time you land and sit down to breakfast, the sun will have warmed everything up and layers can come off. For a complete packing guide, see our post on what to wear on a hot air balloon ride in Marrakech.

Bring Snacks for the Drive

The drive from your hotel to the launch site takes 20 to 30 minutes. Breakfast is served after the flight, not before. If your child does not do well on an empty stomach at 5:30 AM, pack a small snack — a cereal bar, a banana, a few biscuits — to eat in the car. It makes a noticeable difference to mood and energy levels.

Consider the Private Flight

On the Classic Flight, your family shares the basket with other guests. This is perfectly fine for most families, but if you have young children who might feel overwhelmed by a crowded basket, or if you simply want the freedom to move around and enjoy the experience at your own pace, the Private Flight is worth considering.

At 5,000 Dhs for the entire balloon, the Private Flight is also outstanding value for larger families. A family of four pays 1,250 Dhs per person — less than the Classic per-person rate. A family of five pays 1,000 Dhs each. The bigger your group, the better the value.

The Breakfast Is Child-Friendly

The post-flight breakfast includes fresh Moroccan bread, honey, olive oil, soft cheese, pastries, fresh juice and mint tea. There is nothing exotic or challenging for young palates — most children eat enthusiastically, especially after the early start and the excitement of the flight.

Bathroom Break Before Boarding

There are no toilet facilities in the balloon basket or at the launch site. Make sure your child uses the bathroom at the hotel before the pickup car arrives. The entire experience from pickup to return takes approximately four hours, though breakfast offers an opportunity for a break on the ground.

Pricing for Families

Children pay the same fare as adults. There is no children's discount on individual tickets, but the pricing structure naturally favours families through the Private Flight option.

Here is how the numbers work:

Classic Flight — 1,700 Dhs per person:

  • Family of 3: 5,100 Dhs total
  • Family of 4: 6,800 Dhs total
  • Family of 5: 8,500 Dhs total

Private Flight — 5,000 Dhs total (entire balloon):

  • Family of 3: 1,667 Dhs per person
  • Family of 4: 1,250 Dhs per person
  • Family of 5: 1,000 Dhs per person

For families of four or more, the Private Flight is not just cheaper per person — it also gives you the balloon entirely to yourselves. No sharing with strangers, no competing for the best viewing positions, and a pilot who tailors the experience to your family. It is the option we recommend most frequently to families.

What Families Say

Family balloon rides generate some of our most enthusiastic reviews. Parents consistently highlight three things:

The shared experience. Unlike activities where adults and children are separated or engaged at different levels, a balloon flight is something everyone experiences identically. The 7-year-old sees the same Atlas Mountains as the parent. The teenager is just as impressed by the sunrise. It creates a genuine shared memory that families refer back to for years.

How calm it is. Parents who were nervous about taking their children on a balloon flight are almost universally surprised by how gentle and safe the experience feels. Several reviews specifically mention that it was "nothing like they expected" — in the best possible way.

The children's reaction. Many parents tell us it was their child who insisted on the balloon ride after seeing photos online, and that the child's excitement was the highlight of the entire morning. Children talk about their balloon flight for weeks afterward. It becomes the story they tell at school, the drawing they bring to class, the photo they show their grandparents.

Best Season for Families

Balloon flights operate year-round in Marrakech, with over 300 flyable days per year. But some seasons are more comfortable for families than others.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal. Morning temperatures are mild — around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius at ground level — and the skies are reliably clear. Children are comfortable without heavy winter clothing, and the midday heat that follows in summer is not yet a factor. The landscape is also at its most photogenic in spring, with green vegetation and occasional wildflowers visible from the balloon.

Winter (December to February) is excellent for flying — crystal-clear skies and snow-capped Atlas Mountains — but early mornings can be cold, with temperatures around 5 to 10 degrees at ground level and cooler still at altitude. Dress children warmly and they will be fine, but younger children may find the cold less comfortable.

Summer (June to August) offers warm mornings and long daylight hours, but ground temperatures climb rapidly after landing. The flight itself is pleasant, but the post-flight breakfast can be hot. Hydration is important, and the early pickup time is actually an advantage — you experience the coolest part of the day and return before the heat peaks.

Combining with Other Kid-Friendly Activities in Marrakech

A balloon flight takes up only the morning — you are typically back at your hotel by 10:00 to 10:30 AM. That leaves the rest of the day open for other family activities. Here are a few that pair well:

  • Jardin Majorelle. The cobalt-blue garden designed by Yves Saint Laurent is visually striking and manageable in size for children. Allow about an hour.
  • Camel ride in the Palmerie. A short, gentle ride through palm groves. Most operators accommodate children from age 3 upward, often riding with a parent.
  • Horse-drawn carriage tour. A caleche ride around the city walls is a relaxed way to see the ramparts, gardens and main gates without exhausting young legs.
  • The Medina souks. Older children enjoy the sensory overload of the spice markets, leather tanneries and artisan workshops. Keep a close eye on younger ones in the crowds.
  • Oasiria Water Park. Located outside the city, this is a reliable option for hot afternoons when children need to cool down and burn energy.

The balloon flight works especially well as the first activity of a Marrakech holiday. It gives children (and adults) a bird's-eye view of the landscape they will spend the rest of the trip exploring on the ground.
