What to Expect on Your Classic Balloon Flight
Your adventure begins long before sunrise. Around five in the morning, your driver pulls up to your hotel or riad in central Marrakech. The city is still asleep — the souks are shut, the streets are empty, and Marrakech has a rare quietness that almost no visitor ever sees. You settle into the 4x4 and head north through the Palmerie, watching the silhouettes of palm trees slip past a sky that is slowly shifting from deep indigo to soft amber. The drive itself, through the outer edge of Marrakech and into the open countryside, sets the tone for what is about to come.
When you reach the launch field, the scene is already in full swing. Our ground crew has been working since long before you arrived, spreading the huge balloon envelope across the dry earth and firing up the burners. Watching a hot air balloon inflate from a flat sheet of fabric into a towering, glowing structure is genuinely mesmerising — many guests tell us later that this moment was one of the unexpected highlights of the whole morning. The burners roar, the envelope rises, and within minutes a balloon the height of a seven-storey building stands upright against the pre-dawn sky.
Before you climb into the basket, your pilot walks everyone through a short safety briefing. Our pilots are among the most experienced in North Africa — each one holds thousands of flight hours and full CAA certification. You will learn how to brace for landing and where to stand in the basket. The briefing is relaxed and reassuring; we have carried tens of thousands of passengers over the years and our safety record is spotless.
Then comes the moment you have been waiting for. The basket lifts almost imperceptibly off the ground, and within seconds you are rising upward in perfect silence. There is no engine noise, no vibration, no sense of speed — just a gentle, weightless ascent. The first thing most passengers notice is how quiet it is. Between burner blasts, the only sound is the occasional bark of a dog in a distant village or the call of a bird below you. The world opens up in every direction: to the east, the sun breaks the horizon in a blaze of orange and pink. To the south, the Atlas Mountains dominate the skyline, their peaks dusted with snow for much of the year. Below you, a patchwork of palm groves, Berber villages, irrigated farmland, and open red-earth plains stretches all the way to the horizon.
Your flight lasts between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on the wind. During that time, the balloon drifts wherever the air currents carry it — sometimes skimming just above the treetops, sometimes climbing high enough to see the entire Haouz Plain. Your pilot navigates by adjusting altitude: different wind layers move in different directions, and an experienced pilot can steer the balloon with surprising precision by riding these invisible rivers of air.
After touchdown, the celebration begins on the ground. A traditional Moroccan breakfast is laid out under a canopy beside the landing site. You will find freshly baked msemen and baghrir — the spongy Moroccan pancakes that are impossible to find this good anywhere else — alongside local honey, amlou (a rich paste of almonds, argan oil and honey), soft cheese, olives, freshly squeezed orange juice, and pot after pot of sweet Moroccan mint tea. It is a proper breakfast, not a token gesture, and you will eat very well.
The Classic Flight is our most popular package for good reason. At 1,700 Dhs per person — roughly €170 or $185 — it is exceptional value by international standards. A comparable balloon flight in Cappadocia, Turkey starts at €200 or more, and flights over the Serengeti or Bagan can cost three to four times as much. Here in Marrakech, you get the same breathtaking experience for a fraction of the price, with the Atlas Mountains as your backdrop and an authentic Moroccan breakfast to finish the morning.
A few quick tips if this is your first balloon flight. Dress in layers — it is cold at altitude before sunrise and warms up quickly once the sun is up. Wear closed-toe shoes with flat soles. Charge your phone the night before, because you are going to take more photographs than you expect. And do not worry about motion sickness — balloon flight is nothing like a boat or a plane. The basket moves so gently that most people forget they are in the air until they look over the edge and see the ground far below.
